Why volunteer?

To promote an organization that impacts the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instills life-enhancing values and promotes healthy choices through the game of golf.  The ideal volunteer candidate is enthusiastic, energetic and passionate about the work that they do for the benefit of the participants and the organization.

How do I start the process of becoming a volunteer?

Begin by downloading, printing, then completing an application (see below).  Please email the completed application to Alison Boyle at aboyle@thefirstteepittsburgh.org or bring it to her at The Bob O'Connor Golf Course in Schenley Park.  Once she receives your information, she will contact you for an in-person interview.

All volunteers are then asked to complete background checks to ensure child safety.

Then, all volunteers are asked to attend our volunteer trainings.  There are 2 trainings we ask you to attend.  The first training explains our mission, coach philosophy and general program implementation.  The second training is helpful for seasoned coaches and is a more in-depth training that focuses on our Life Skills Experience clinics through simulated lesson delivery.  This training allows volunteers to experience The First Tee program under the supervision of a Lead Coach.

Where can I volunteer?

We have a number of locations to select from; north, south, east, west and in the city.  Once your interview takes place, a location will be decided that best fits you.

When can I volunteer?

Most volunteering, especially Coaching, takes place in the evenings or on Saturdays.  However, some opportunities can be during the day.

What types of volunteer opportunities do you offer?

Assistant Coach:  assist in our weekly golf clinics.  All that we request is that you make a 7-week commitment (one day per week), for 2 hours each week.  Each clinic is led by one of our trained staff members who creates a written lesson plan for our volunteers to follow.

IT Manager:  assist The First Tee staff with IT issues as they arise.  We always need help with our network, laptops, website, etc...

Database Manager:  computer data entry of participant, volunteer, and community relation records and updates pertinent chapter information for Home Office and community relations.  The database manager is expected to update the data a minimum of every other week.

Equipment Manager:  organize and sort donated equipment, discard unfit equipment, and maintain and arrange equipment for distribution to participants at least once a week.

Greeter:  registers participants, hands information to parents, greets visitors, answers phone and provide general program information

Logistics Coordinator:  set up facility according to lesson plan, procure necessary equipment for each station, ensure a safe learning environment, assist with transition between stations and bathroom breaks during class, break down stations and cleans up facility following class

Membership Coordinator:  contacts new participants by phone and welcomes them to the program, answers general questions regarding program, makes follow up calls for special events and registration for participant opportunities.

Special Events Assistant: assist the staff with the planning, organization, outreach, and day of logistics for fundraisers and friend-raisers that support The First Tee Pittsburgh.

"It is a life affirming, mentoring process combined with the love of golf and the simple tasks of camaraderie, manners and successes we are faced with on a daily basis."

Coach Abi C., volunteers at The Bob

"I call The First Tee the “Little League of golf.” It teaches kids basic golf skills and core values that they can utilize for the rest of their lives. It is a wonderful introduction to the game of golf as well as the principles that can be used through life."

Coach Rick R., volunteers at The Bob

"Great organization that promotes values, ethics, and hard work to the youth of our community and applies the lessons learned into the game of golf. A win/win."

Coach Rick, volunteers at The Bob

"I like golf...I like kids…TFTP IS A PERFECT MATCH FOR ME. I can't think of better way to volunteer my time."

Coach Marianne S., volunteers at South Park

"I retired from a 35 year career in 2013. At that time a friend of mine told me about a volunteer opportunity at the First Tee - one because I was retired and two because I love golf. I volunteered as a coach for two seasons and learned how to teach the kids the fundamentals of golf as well as teaching them the nine core values which they can use throughout their life, even if they are no longer golfing. I think the First Tee is a great program, but I felt I could be better utilized in another area. After a conversation with Alison Boyle, she told me about other volunteer needs at the First Tee. I am now doing some administrative volunteering in the office which I have really enjoyed. I call the First Tee office with my availability for the week and Alison lets me know which of those days I can be used in the office. The flexibility of this opportunity is also very attractive to me".

Sue H., volunteers at The Bob

"Thursdays are going great, a nice group of kids."

Coach Greg E., volunteers at South Park
